Camp Por Dos: Week 1

06 July 2014 | Primosten, Croatia
Marta Portoles
It is hard to believe the first week of Camp Por Dos is almost over. We have been sailing every other day to a different bay: from the unnamed bay on the east side of Pašman Otok (Otok = Island), between the small towns of Pašman and Kraj, we sailed to Uvala Koširina (uvala = bay) in Murter Otok. Koširina is a beautiful bay with a big campsite at the head of the bay. The kids spend most of their time in the water either swimming or playing with the paddle-boards.

Next, we were looking for a smaller, more private bay with fewer unclothed people ☺, so we sailed south to Uvala Vanjska in Kaprije Otok, but we were driven away by a high number of wasps. We settled for a couple of days in Mala Stupica on Žirje Otok. We anchored in the southeast corner of Mala Stupica next to a little peninsula connected to the rest of the island by a narrow pebbly beach, above us there were some military ruins with a couple of pill boxes and cannon emplacements (minus the cannons) that the kids were keen on exploring.

For our 4th of July celebration we had a beach fire and a spontaneous beach clean up – lots and lots of plastic sheeting mostly in small pieces, plastic bottles of all sorts and sizes and many shoes! We filled three garbage bags and felt accomplished despite the amount of plastic debrie and rubblish still lying in the beach – as Mark said, “let’s do a little bit at a time”.

After Stupica we arrived at Primosten, a cute town build in an island connected with the mainland by a causeway. We anchored away from the mooring field in the east side of the bay. We hit town, as we needed to get rid of all our rubbish, replenish our groceries (it is amazing how much four 13-year old boys can eat), renew our Internet subscription, and get ice cream. We walked around the old town, and up to the church. Despite the numerous tourist shops and restaurants, it had managed to keep its charm. We indulged ourselves for dinner at Toni's Restaurant in the waterfront – the food was delicious and the location was perfect as we had a perfect view of the bay and all the boat activity: anchoring, dragging, maneuvering to get moorings and tying to the marina wall.

Next day, we sailed south towards the Central Dalmatian coast and the second week of Camp Por Dos.
